Records

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

I’m around a friends house, it’s the first time I’ve come around and the first thing I spot is the record player and the vinals in the corner. It has been so long since I listened to a record! He has got a great collection, and I spent all night listening to Crosy Stills and Nash and Young. Man it has been forever since I listened to their music, and excellent it is indeed!

So records, everything technology wise tells me that records aren’t as good as CD’s. They are easily damaged, difficult to transport, larger, produce a lower quality sound and they aren’t as convenient as CD’s i.e. you have to turn the record over, and you can’t easily and quickly skip to track 3.

Yet have I really enjoyed listening to those records all night… so why? I’m not really sure, but there was something about the crackling and the slightly lower quality that I ENJOYED hearing. I actively liked the imperfection of the sound, and the music I was listening to was originally sold on record, so I also appretiated that I was listening to it through the medium it was originally recorded for.

I don’t think I’m going to run out and buy a record player any time soon, but I don’t think records are as dead as perhaps many of us think they are, there is still a place in the world for them.
