Film Review: I Spit On Your Grave
During the infamous video nasty era of the 1970s, when the door to film-making hell was flung wide open and directors the world over became possessed with the need to create the nastiest, most awful, politically-incorrect film abominations that they could muster from their grubby little low-budget minds, one film stood out as particularly savage: rape-revenge thriller I Spit On Your Grave. (Known by some under the alternative title of Day Of The Woman.)
What riled most people who witnessed I Spit wasn’t the title, or even the excessive violence —because every single film that surfaced seemed to be more violent than the last—but the fact that the lead protagonist was a woman who was raped multiple times, and then went on a crusade to kill the assailants one by one. People couldn’t decide who they should be siding with: should they actually feel a little bit sorry for the small-town hicks who committed these heinous deeds and paid for it horribly, or should they feel sorry for the victim? Not that anybody admitted this at the time, of course; most people complained about the film and then found themselves watching it, actually compelled.
Several of the scenes in I Spit are of an acquired taste, to say the very least; the harshest scene by far, which gave the film its legendary reputation as one of the nastiest videos to have ever been released, was the one where the victim gets into the bath with the ring-leader of the hicks–then reaches out of the bath a few minutes later to grab a large sharp knife which she uses to do something which has every man in the entire world–and possibly some women, too–clutching his groin and screaming ‘She can’t do that!’
Love it or hate it, I Spit is actually quite a good film. If you can get past all the carnage, lurking at the heart of this picture is something worth watching: who will you side with?
